Newly-wed gang raped in Rangia

Guwahati, Oct 16: In yet another sjocking incident, a newly-wed woman was brutally raped by a gang of seven persons at Rangia in Kamrup district. The 23-year old woman was raped when she and her husband were coming back from a friend’s house in No 1 Kekurikuchi village of Rangia. Taking advantage of darkness, the miscreants first assaulted her husband. After he was beaten senseless, they took turns to rape the woman.

Four of the seven miscreants have been identified as Tilak Das, Pankaj Das, reswar Das and Sourav Das.

Superintendent of Police, Kamrup (Rural), Indrani Baruah said, “The incident is really shameful and highly condemble. The woman was raped in presence of her husband. We have so far arrested three of them. The other four have been absconding since last night. We have launched a search operation to b the culprits as soon as possible.”

Notably, Assam has witnessed a steep rise in crimes against women since the past few years. According to Assam police reports, a total of 15,206 rape cases were registered in different police stations in the State from 2005 to August 2014.

A total of 1,217 rape cases were registered in 2005, 1,203 in 2006, 1,310 in 2007, 1,419 in 2008, 1,269 in 2009, 1,721 in 2010, 2,011 in 2011, 1,716 in 2012, 1,937 in 2013 and 1,403 cases registered up to August 2014.

A similar incident had taken place in September last year in Rangia where a 25-year-old woman was gang-raped by a youth she trusted as her lover and seven of his friends.
