No compromise on Citizenship Bill: AGP

GUWAHATI, Oct 12: The AGP, an alliance partner in the BJP-led Government in Assam on Friday reiterated its stand that it will not tolerate the Centre’s move to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 under any circumstance.

The statement came a day after the two-day-long executive meeting of the BJP that concluded on Thursday adopted a resolution to consider the NRC update, Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Assam Accord implementation and identity crisis of indigenous people of the State on the same line.

AGP general secretary Kamala Kanta Kalita said his party will never compromise with anything that goes against emotion, sentiment, identity and culture of indigenous people of Assam. He said the AGP has already made officially and politically clear that it will not accept the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

It may mentioned that Cabinet Minister and AGP president Atul Bora vehemently opposed the Bill during a meeting of North East Democratic Alliance held in Guwahati a few months ago in the presence of BJP national president Amit Shah.
