Not promises, give roadmaps: AASU to political parties

Guwahati, March 24: The All Assam Students Union today asked political parties to come clear on key issues plaguing the State.

"We don't want promises. We want the parties to come up with a clear time-bound roadmap to address the issues," the students' body said in a statement.

The AASU wanted the parties to spell out how they propose to ensure that all the clauses of the Assam Accord are implemented in toto.

"It is clear that Assam will not take the burden of any illegal migrant who entered the State after March 24, 1971. Whichever party comes to power must ensure that no illegal migrant is able to include his me in the NRC using forged documents," it said.

The AASU also wants the new government to ensure that academic future of the students is secured.

Other issues flagged by the students' body are: Declaration of State's flood and erosion problem as a tiol problem, protection of Majuli and Kaziranga tiol Park, ST status to six ethnic communities of the State, solution to the State's unemployment problem, reservation of State youths in C & D category Central sector jobs, including railways and settlement of the long-pending inter-state boundary disputes. It also wanted a scientific resolution to the controversy surrounding construction of big dams in the State.
