NRC Assam: Quality Checking Underway

NRC update on the last lap

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: With just 21 days to go for the publication of the final NRC Assam on August 31, 2019, the State NRC authority is now busy in quality checking. Such checking is aimed at ensuring an error-free NRC Assam and dispelling some doubts.

There may be a few more hearings to dispel doubts. Those who have missed the recently-concluded three-day need-based hearing (re-verification) due to genuine reasons will also be given chances to attend hearing afresh. The need-based hearing ended on Wednesday. The last phase of hearing, according to sources, will be in centres near respective applicants’ residences.

Disposing officers (those who heard NRC applicants), on the other hand, are also busy in giving their opinions on the already heard applicants. In order to ensure error-free opinions from the disposing officers, the deputy commissioners and the revenue circle officers have also been asked to critically examine the opinions. This is also a part of the quality checking that is underway on a war footing now.

Yet another quality checking has been underway regarding inclusion of names in the final.

As many as 3.29 crore people applied for the inclusion of their names in the NRC Assam, and the names of around 2.89 crore applicants figured in the complete draft. Later, a list 1.02 lakh applicants for expulsion from the complete draft came out. The 1.02 lakh people were heard again.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) (ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় নাগৰিক পঞ্জীকৰণ) is a register containing names of all genuine Indian citizens. The register was first prepared after the 1951 Census of India.Census of India. The NRC is now being updated in Assam to include the names of those persons (or their descendants) who appear in the NRC, 1951, or in any of the Electoral Rolls up to the midnight of 24 March 1971 or in any one of the other admissible documents issued up to midnight of 24 March 1971, which would prove their presence in Assam or in any part of India on or before 24 March 1971.
