NRC Update & Lok Sabha Polls Work To Proceed Simultaneously

GUWAHATI: Work of both the General Election, 2019, and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating process will be carried on simultaneously, and the State Government officials working on the National Register of Citizens of India work will be kept free from poll duty. The Election Department, Assam, and the NRC authority have already prepared a roadmap in this regard.

The process of hearing on claims and objections commenced from February 15. And, the work gained momentum from March 1. As per the Supreme Court directive, the State government has provided 3,457 officials to the National Register of Citizens of India authority for this purpose.

The latest SC directive has stated that the NRC work should not be hampered due to poll-related work. It further mandated that none of the officials involved in the National Register of Citizens of India updating process should be involved in any general election work. Applications have been filed for 36.2 lakh claims and two lakh objections. The final NRC will be published on July 31.

The hearing processes on these claims and objections are expected to be completed either during the last part of May or the middle part of June this year. After its completion, the NRC authority would be initiating the processes of quality check followed by data entry.
