Observe Ramzan without lockdown violations, says Assam Wakf Board

Chief Minister Sonowal has also made the same appeal

GUWAHATI: Muslims across Assam will have to offer namaz and do iftar (breaking fast) at home during the coming Ramzan month starting Saturday due to ban on congregations at mosques/shrines during the extended nation-wide lockdown to prevent spreading dangerous coronavirus.

“All Muslims are advised to offer congregational prayers (salat) and break their fast in the evening at home during Ramzan due to lockdown extension. All mosques, madrassas and other religious institutions have been instructed not to organize iftar and special Ramzan prayers during the night,” a press communiqué issued by the Chief Executive Officer of Assam Wakf Board Syeda Hasina M. Rahman on Tuesday stated.

Ramzan, the Muslim’s holy month, will start from Saturday depending on sighting of the new moon. During this month Muslims fast throughout the day, recite Quran, offer namaz, give donations to poor and organize iftar at the end of the day (sunset).

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also requested the Muslim devotes to perform the rituals of the holy month by adhering to the lockdown norms. He said the world is passing through the most crucial and challenging time. “It will be a great service to humanity if we remain at home, maintain social distance and other hygienic rules to break the chain of COVID-19,” Sonowal said.

Noted lawyer and president of Sarania Kabarasthan, Nekibur Zaman has also appealed to all Muslims in the State to observe Ramzan’s rituals by adhering to the lockdown rules and restrictions to prevent spreading coronavirus.
