Guwahati/ Biswath/ Tezpur, May 2: The nexus between poachers and a section of sentinels in Kaziranga tiol Park came to light yet again as Jakhalabandha police arrested four forest guards – three of them permanent employees and one temporary – following investigations into rhino poaching cases.

Keshav Gayan, Tankeswar Bordoloi, Pinku Das and Kuddus Ali were arrested yesterday following the interrogation of a suspected poacher Sorab Ali of Deusar who was picked up a few days ago.

Three other residents of Deusar – Rafique Ali, Saiful Ali and Ibrahim Ali – have also been arrested by police in connection with the case.

The forest guards admitted involvement in poaching incident on November, 2015 when they were deployed at the Tunikati forest camp of Burapahar range. Based on their confession, police today exhumed the skeleton of a rhino buried about 100 metres from the forest camp.

Meanwhile, a male rhino was killed at Karatigaon Chapari under Sootia police station in Sonitpur district in the wee hours of Monday. According to police, the poachers chopped off the rhino’s horn after killing it at Karatigaon Chapari near 6th Addition of Kaziranga tiol Park.

Police and forest teams conducted a joint massive search operation to b the poachers by using sniffer dogs, police added.

Local residents meanwhile said that the rhino had been grazing in the area for almost eight months now. However, despite being informed, the forest department failed to send back the rhino to the KNP, they alleged.
