MANGALDAI: In response to a call made by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 30 ethnic organizations of the State, the local unit of AASU and the Asom Silpi Samaj organized a massive anti-CAA rally at Bhebarghat field here on Monday.

The rally, christened ‘Gana Hunkar’ (People’s Thunder) was attended by hundreds of people, including women and senior citizens. The rally was addressed by a dozen of speakers, including AASU chief adviser Dr Samujjal Kr Bhattacharya, AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai, AASU executive member Utpal Kr Sharma, artistes Babu Barua, Ajay Phukan and Nekib Rahman, among others.

AASU leader Bhattacharya in his speech said that CAA must be withdrawn and there would be no compromise over it. “The people of Assam will not take rest until CAA is withdrawn. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that they have respect for the democratic movement, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has stated that they have respect for the democratic protest. If so, they should withdraw the CAA respecting the relentless democratic protests of the people of the State,” Dr Bhattacharya asserted. He further criticized the BJP government “for miserably failing to convince the people of the State regarding CAA and taking the path of misinterpretation in the name of organizing ‘peace rallies’”.

AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai too strongly criticized the BJP-led government for their ‘anti-Assam’, ‘anti-Northeast policies’ and for dividing people in the name of religion. The protesters displayed placards against CAA and shouted anti-government, as well as anti-BJP slogans to the beats of the traditional Assamese drum known as the ‘Doba’.

Earlier, the organizers had to shift the meeting venue from the Mangaldai College field to the field of Paschim Mangaldai Kristi Sangha since a huge team of police and paramilitary forces cordoned off the field to stop the organizers and the people from entering the campus.
