Phase I: 30 candidates declare crimil cases

Guwahati, March 30: Of the 539 candidates in fray in the first phase of Assam assembly elections, 30 have declared crimil cases in their affidavits, according to an alysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms.

In all, 25 candidates have declared serious crimil cases, including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidpping, crimes against women etc.

Two candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC 302) - Kushal Dowari of the BJP from Thowra constituency and Jardan Hazarika, an Independent from Amguri constituency.

Kushal Dowari has a case of attempt to murder registered against him.

Ibungobi Singha, an Independent from Sol constituency, has declared one charge related to assault or crimil force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty (IPC-354).

Abdul Ahad Choudhury, an Independent from Karimganj North constituency, has a case of kidpping for ransom lodged against him. Among others who have declared cases are BJP candidate from Soi Aminul Haque Laskar (three cases), Congress candidate from Borkhola Rumi th (three cases), Independent candidate from Karimganj North zrul Islam Choudhury (two cases), and BJP candidate from Dhakuakho ba Kumar Doley, AIUDF candidate from Karimganj North Sahabul Islam Choudhury, Congress candidate from Sootea Praneswar Basumatary, Congress candidate from Karimganj Siddeque Ahmed and Congress candidate from zira Debabrata Saikia with one case each.

Eight (12%) out of 65 candidates from Indian tiol Congress (INC), 3 (6%) out of 54 candidates from Bhartiya Jata Party (BJP) and 3 (11%) out of 27 candidates from All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) have declared cases against themselves.

Fourteen Independent candidates have crimil cases registered against them.

Three constituencies - Karimganj North, Soi and Hailakandi - which go to polls in the first phase on April 4 have three or more candidates with declared crimil cases.
