Phase II: Only 44 females among 525 in fray

Guwahati, March 26: Among the 525 candidates who will contest in the second phase of assembly elections in 61 seats, only 44 are women.

Today, 33 candidates withdrew from the race. Earlier, 33 nomitions were rejected by election officials.

The Congress is fighting in 57 of the 61 seats that go to polls on April 11. The AIUDF has fielded candidates in 47 seats.

The BJP is contesting in 35 seats, while its alliance partners AGP and BPF have put up candidates in 19 and 10 seats respectively. The CPI(M) is contesting in nine seats, while the CPI has put up candidates in five.

Hajo has the highest number of candidates at 16, followed by Sorbhog (15).

Only three candidates are in fray each at Chapaguri and Roha.

There are four candidates in fray at South Salmara from where AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal is also contesting.
