Prize NDFB(S) catch in army net

GUWAHATI, April 18: Dealing a blow to the Songbijit faction of the tiol Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), the Army in a joint operation with the Kokrajhar police apprehended a close aide of the NDFB(S)'s self- styled deputy commander-in-chief Batha from Chetguri village in Kokrajhar district on Saturday.

The apprehended cadre has been identified as Samar Basumatary alias So who is the commander of the outfit’s Chirang platoon.

Army sources said that Basumatary underwent training in Myanmar from January 25 to March 15 in 2010. He was later made responsible for imparting training to new recruits of the outfit at the NDFB camp in Myanmar from 2010 to 2013, Army sources added.

Army sources further revealed that Basumatary, who is one of the seniormost cadres of the outfit, was directly involved in the massacre of Adivasis in Ultapani on the night of December 23 last year, in which 13 Adivasis were killed. The simultaneous strikes by NDFB(S) ultras at Phulbari and Batasipur in Sonitpur district and Serfanguri and Ultapani in Kokrajhar district had claimed at least 34 lives, while unconfirmed reports put the toll at 40.

Army sources said that Basumatary was also involved in stching of weapons from the Territorial Ecological Force (TEF) in Kokrajhar district last year. “One 7.65 mm pistol (factory made), three live rounds of bullets, one hand grede and other items were recovered during the operation on Saturday,” Army sources said.
