GUWAHATI, April 23: A sensation prevailed at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on the death of a newborn yesterday. The situation escalated to such a pass that the police had to be called by the hospital authority to bring the situation under control.

According to reports, Ranuma Begum was referred to the GMCH from Morigaon Civil Hospital yesterday. She gave birth to a girl baby around 5:30 pm yesterday, but the baby died after half-an-hour. The death of the baby led the attendants of the patient to create a ruckus. The situation came to such a pass that the hospital authorities had to call the police. The police quelled the situation.

GMCH Superintendent BK Bezbaruah said: “We wanted to make the attendants of the patient know that the baby was born with a breathing problem. They, however, were not ready to buy what we said. They alleged medical lapses behind the death of the baby. They even alleged that the baby has been exchanged another baby. We then offered them to go for a D test. The post-mortem of the body of the baby was done today. They, however, forcibly took the release of the patient. We’ve instituted an inquiry committee into the death of the baby with Prof. PL Talukdar, Prof. Gayatri Bezboruah, Prof. RK Talukdar and Dr. P Padmapati. They have been asked to submit their report within three days.”
