Irregularities in Majuli protection work

New Delhi, Dec 3: The Central government has received complaints regarding the work on the protection of Majuli island on Brahmaputra river in Assam, Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvetion Sanwar Lal Jat said on Thursday.

"The (Brahmaputra) Board has informed that complaints have been received in respect of work of protection of Majuli island (Phase II and III)," Jat said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.

"The investigations on these complaints are underway," he added.

According to the minister, funds have been released to the Brahmaputra Board for different development works in Assam during the last three years and the current year.

In 2012-13, Rs.43 crore (Rs.430 million) was released to the board and in 2014-15 Rs.40 crore was given. In 2015-16, Rs.17.50 crore has been released till October 31, Jat said in his reply.
