Rampant Destruction of Resources in Golaghat District

GOLAGHAT: Massive deforestation and destruction of river resources are going on in Golaghat district and some dishonest forest officials are allegedly involved with the forest mafia in these activities.

Illegal quarrying in various parts of the Kaliani and Doigrung rivers is posing a threat to the rivers and their surroundings. Conscious citizens have alleged that under the supervision of the Beat Officer of Bokial Forest Beat under Golaghat Divisional Forest office, massive destruction of the Kaliani River is going on near Bogamati, Hautoli Gaon, Burahohaikhat, Bokial and Miripathar.

More than 100 trucks and dumpers carry sand and stones every day. It has also been alleged that the forest mafia, under the very noses of some forest officials, are extracting sand and stone from the riverbed and transporting the materials in trucks and dumpers. This is diverting the natural course of the river. The forest mafia allegedly have an unholy nexus with forest officials due to which rampant destruction of forest resources is going on in the district. The mafias run illegal business of sand and stone without paying any taxes to the government.

Various organizations have protested against these illegal activities but the department concerned has allegedly failed to stop the destruction of these river resources. The conscious people of Golaghat have demanded the Forest Department to immediately stop the illegal business of forest resources and to take stringent action against those involved in such activities.
