Ranjit Das: A profile

Guwahati, June 1: Born on December 1, 1965, the 19th Speaker of Assam Assembly Ranjit Kumar Das began his career as a correspondent of The Assam Tribune in 1991.

An M.Sc. (Botany) and Post Graduate Diploma holder in Jourlism from Gauhati University, Das later reported from Barpeta Road for three other newspapers – North East Times, Dainik Asom and Ajir Asom of The Sentinel group, besides working as the chief editor of a weekly Sampratik published from his town.

Das later went on to clear the Indian Information Service (IIS) and worked with the I&B ministry.

Before that, he had also worked as a lecturer in BBK College, gaon and MC College, Barpeta.

Das opened his political innings when he joined the BJP in 1992.

Born to late Arabinda Das and Hira Das, Ranjit Kumar Das had earlier served the BJP in various capacities, including deputy leader of the legislature party in the previous assembly.
