Registrar General of India (RGI) Wants NRC By June 30

GUWAHATI: The Registrar General of India (RGI) wants the NRC (National Register of Citizens) Authority, Assam to complete the NRC update process by June 30, 2019. Such a step has been needed as NRC updation was earlier set to complete by December 31, 2018, but the exercise is not yet over. If the situation demands, the Registrar General of India may fix a fresh timeline. The RGI notifies that ‘the enumeration in connection with the updation of the National Register of Citizens, 1951, in respect of the State of Assam shall be completed within the period ending on the 30th day of June, 2019’. The RGI is the right body to set the timeline for the completion of the final NRC. However, it is the Supreme Court of India that has the last say as to when the final NRC of Assam will be published.
