Guwahati, June 2: An admirer of Bhupen Hazarika and Zubin Garg, Ripunjoy Kalita, who secured the first rank in the HSLC examitions, aspires to become an automobile engineer.

In fact, even before his results were out, Ripunjoy had enrolled himself at the Sai Vikash Junior College in Guwahati from where he will complete his higher secondary in science stream before competing in the engineering entrance exams.

Born to Anil Kalita, a junior engineer in the PHE department, and Alaka Kalita of Lachitgar in Pathsala, Ripunjoy did not have any fixed study hours. “Before the tests, I used to study for 4 to 4-and-half hours. Later, I increased it to six/seven hours,” he said.

Though Ripunjoy never thought he would top the results, he expected to secure a rank between fifth and tenth.

Besides his parents and grandmother, he expressed his gratitude to his teachers at Gilbert English Medium School for their support and guidance. Ripunjoy also took private tuitions in Science and Advanced Mathematics for “additiol knowledge”.

A regular reader of vercular newspapers, Ripunjoy feels that instead of distributing computers, the State government needs to equip educatiol institutions with better facilities for students.

On a different note, the first rank holder also had some words of general wisdom.

When asked about the problems his State is facing, he said, “The solution lies in a united effort. Everyone has to play his/her part and not just pass the buck to others. One or two persons cannot make any difference.”
