Singer Jiten Deka killed in road mishap

Goalpara/ Azara, Oct 26: Noted singer Jiten Deka (62) and his colleague Mitradev Rabha were killed in a road accident on NH 37 at Fafal near Dudhnoi late last night.

The duo and three other co-artistes were returning after performing at a cultural program at Boko.

The Hyundai Eon car in which they were travelling collided with a sand-laden truck near the 'Bonbasi Than'. While his colleague Mitradev Rabha died on the spot, Deka succumbed to the injuries on the way to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.

The three other passengers at the back seat - Nirmal Chatterjee, Bakhistha Cheran and Hargovinda Deka - received minor injuries.

Jiten Deka was a pioneer radio artist in the early eighties and had trained many students. Born at Harimura village, Deka had founded the Jiri Kola Kendra, a platform for budding artists.  He had released two audio cassettes. His number "Mur Sukula Ghora, am Jaar Aakha" is still popular in the State.

On Monday, after his body was brought to the town, individuals and representatives of various organizations and institutions thronged his Santigar residence and paid their last respects. Later, a procession was taken out with the mortal remains.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar th, general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the Goalpara district unit of AASU, former CM PK Mahanta and AGP president Atul Bora have condoled Deka's demise.

Meanwhile, two students were killed when they were hit by a truck at Azara today. The deceased were identified as Menujal Marcus Rutz (24) of galand, a second year engineering student of Donbosco University, and Mizing Ering of Aruchal Pradesh, a student of RIST. Menujal and Mizing were travelling a motorcycle along with another friend - Pathung A Hamtos - when the accident took place. Pathung also sustained injuries.
