SIT to probe excise tax evasion

Guwahati, June 17: A Special Investigation Team has been set up to probe into the alleged evasion of excise tax to the tune of several thousand crores by some bonded warehouses and distilleries in the State, Excise minister Parimal Shuklabaidya said today.

The minister said the SIT has been asked to submit the probe report within one month.

 AGP legislator Phani Bhushan Choudhury had written a letter to Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal seeking an inquiry into the alleged Rs 4,000 crore revenue loss incurred by the State government due to tax evasion by some bonded warehouses and distilleries in the State. ming 12 such erring warehouses and distilleries and producing fake permits used by them, Choudhury said the scam has been going on since 2007-08. The Bongaigaon MLA also alleged that among the 12 warehouses and distilleries, 10 are owned by one person. The irregularities were committed in the garb of bond-to-bond transfer and fake permits.
