RUN-UP TO NRC
GUWAHATI, June 7: Ahead of the publication of the complete draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) on June 30, the Assam Police is keeping a close vigil on the social media. Cyberdome sleuths are on their 24x7 vigilance to track any activity aimed at putting the existing peace and tranquility in jeopardy. On the scanner is a list of Facebook accounts, Twitter accounts, and Whatsapp groups. The police has already tracked a number of accounts in the social media that are unnaturally active vis-à-vis the NRC update exercise.
Talking to the media here on Thursday, Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia said, “Strict monitoring is already on to check any untoward comments that might jeopardize the security, peace and tranquility of the society. Once any such activity is traced, swift action will be taken to track down the person, and action will be taken as per law.”
It has been learned that some people have been using various portals of the social media to float misinformation and also plant fabricated news on the NRC. They have been active overtime to create divisions in the society or create confusion on the issue among the people.
Warning that “no activity that might jeopardize peace and tranquility will be tolerated”, the DGP further said, “Ground-level reassessment is being done of the sensitive areas across the State. Yesterday such a review was carried out in some districts in lower Assam at a security-level meet in Bongaigaon. Another round of this scanning of other places at the ground level will be undertaken tomorrow.”
The Assam Police headquarters has already given instructions to the SPs to do a fresh ground mapping of the sensitive areas under their jurisdiction. This is being done as a security reassessment measure. Though such assessments are done on a routine basis, the latest move of the police headquarters has assumed significance in view of some quarters apprehending trouble in some sensitive areas ahead of the publication of the NRC.
