GUWAHATI, May 13: Assam BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass alleged on Sunday that a conspiracy has been hatched to derail the ongoing NRC update in the State by making its people emotionally charged against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

“At a time when the State is going to publish the final draft NRC on June 30 a section of people is trying to create a situation that may go against the NRC update. Such an attempt has been evident in an emotionally volatile situation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill created by certain vested interest groups. One of the organizers of the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Bill campaigns recently said if the Bill is passed nearly 1.70 crore Hindu Bangladeshis will come to Assam. What is the basis of such a statistics? Let us all wait with patience and get the NRC published first,” Dass said.

Dass, who was addressing a press conference at the State BJP headquarters at Hengrabari here on Sunday, said when the former Congress regime at the Centre had imposed the controversial IM(DT) Act it had not sent any Joint Parliamentary Committee to listen to the grievances and opinions of the people of Assam.

“But the present BJP regime at the Centre has constituted a Joint Parliamentary Committee to take public opinions on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The BJP government in Assam invited the JPC to visit Assam and accordingly, the committee visited Guwahati and Silchar recently. The JPC will again come to Assam to listen to public opinions. I appeal to all not to vitiate the situation during the next JPC visit,” Dass said.

On other hand, an emergent meeting of the office-bearers of the BJP held at the party headquarters here warned all its leaders and workers not to make any opinion on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill without the approval of the BJP top brass. The BJP’s disciplinary committee has been entrusted to inquire alleged anti-party comments made by its woman leader Meera Borthakur.
