NEW DELHI: The Congress core committee has deliberated on the NRC (National Register of Citizens) and the CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill) and reiterated that the party stands for the protection of genuine Indian citizens.

An urgent meeting of the Congress core committee with party president Sonia Gandhi in the chair was held at 10 Janpath Road on Friday on the NRC and the CAB. Senior leaders like KC Venugopal, former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, APCC president Ripun Bora, Piyush Shantivishwas, Sushmita Dev, Gaurav Gogoi, Ahmed Patel, Luizinho Faleirio and others attended the meeting.

Talking to this correspondent a Congress leader who attended the meeting said, “As far as the NRC is concerned no Indian citizen should be harassed.”

On the CAB the Congress leader said, “Let the government come with the CAB in the Parliament. Our stand is clear. The CAB shouldn’t dilute the significance of the Assam Accord.”

Other northeastern States, including Meghalaya, have opposed the CAB.

According to Congress sources, the meeting discussed strategies to be adopted by the party that has been at loggerheads with the BJP for its style of functioning as far as the NRC update is concerned.

The Opposition party also took serious note of the announcement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that NRC would be updated across India. The RSS is also demanding NRC update in all States of the country.
