CITIZENSHIP BILL

GUWAHATI, June 4: Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami on Monday assured a Congress delegation that he would consider its recommendation to immediately convene a special session of the House to debate the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and, if required, adopt a resolution to safeguard the provisions of the Assam Accord.

The seven-member delegation of the Assam Congress Legislature Party was led by the Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia.

Saikia pointed out that the people of the State are disillusioned and angry because they have realized that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is a ploy by the government to nullify the Assam Accord. It is the Speaker’s duty to appreciate the gravity of the issue and immediately convene a special session of the House so that the representatives of the people of the State can protect the State’s interests, Saikia said.
