Special Investigation Team (SIT) Apprehends Hardcore ULFA-I Rebel

ITANAGAR: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Arunachal Pradesh Police has arrested a top United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) leader on charges of extorting money from high profile politicians from the North East, including Arunachal Pradesh, on behalf of the outfit.

According to SIT SP Dr Navdeep Singh Brar, a team comprising of Inspectors N LaIi and P Nikang led by Brar has arrested Ranjan Bikash Borgohain, a resident of Sukapha Nagar in Moranhat under Dibrugarh district of Assam who, claimed to be a senior commander of ULFA-I, on November 14 evening from a location at the outskirts of Guwahati.

Police recovered from him letters addressed to politicians of various parties on the letterhead of the outfit with signatures of ULFA-I deputy commander-in-chief Drishti Rajkhowa.

Two diaries having personal details, phone numbers of prominent political figures, five debit/credit cards of various banks and three mobile phones were also seized from him, Dr Brar said.

“After putting sustained effort and raids in Delhi, Dibrugarh, and Guwahati over a period of one month, Ranjan Bikash Borghain was finally tracked and arrested. He was produced before the court the next day which remanded him to seven-day police custody,” the SP said.

During interrogation, it was revealed that he was earlier arrested by Delhi Police on threat and extortion charges and sent to Tihar Jail. His link to ULFA dates back to 1985. He has recruiting cadres for the outfit and also held an important post.

Further investigation is in progress, the SP added.
