State put on high security alert

GUWAHATI, Aug 14: In the wake of the recent terror attacks in BTAD and Upper Assam, security has been beefed up across the State ahead of the Independence Day celebrations to be held on Monday.

The Assam Police has been making all out efforts to ensure a safe Independence Day. Police sources said cops have been asked to be on high alert. Different areas in the city have been put under a massive security cover.

Police and army are searching out each and every sensitive location in Guwahati and other parts of the State to look for IEDs and bombs. Keeping in view the upcoming Independence Day, present security scerio in Kashmir and impending threats from militants, frisking points have been established in the city as well as in all the sensitive districts of the State.

After the ULFA terror strike at Philobari in Tinsukia district, suspected KPLT militants on Friday night killed a policeman at Rongmongwe police station in Karbi Anglong. On Friday last, two Hindi-speaking persons of a family were killed by suspected ULFA (I) ultras at Bamungaon under Philobari police station. The attack at Balajan Tili in Kokrajhar on August 5 was also one of the bloodiest militant attacks in recent times, leaving 12 people dead and several critically injured.

In Guwahati, the main Independence Day programme will be centrally held at the Khapara Veteriry playground where the tricolour will be hoisted. Thirty-two CCTV cameras have been installed at the venue to strengthen security vigil. Sources said about 15,000 people are expected to take part in this programme.  

Meanwhile, one IED was recovered at Sori’s Jalgaon on Sunday. Sources said the IED was kept, targeting a security convoy.
