Students take JE vaccine, fall sick

BONGAIGAON, April 9: About 110 students fell ill after being administered vaccine for Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Alukhunda area of Bijni subdivision in Chirang district on Thursday.

Rajen th, guardian of one of the ill students, said that vaccition for JE was given in Nos 1 and 2 Bonekuchi LP School. “Just after the vaccition, about 50 students of No 1 Bonekuchi LP School and about 60 students of No 2 Bonekuchi LP School fell ill. They started vomiting and were immediately taken to the nearby Alukhunda PHE and Manikpur PHE. After treatment, the condition of the students improved.” Hearing about their children falling ill, angry guardians soon began gathering in both the schools. They locked up the health workers who had administered the vaccines, inside a room and even assaulted some of them.

Later police and CRPF arrived and tried to bring the situation under control, filly resorting to a mild baton charge to disperse the angry mob. The health workers were rescued. As per latest reports, the children are all out of danger.
