Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project: Work to Resume after the Rainy Season

GUWAHATI: The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) is now set to resume the construction work of the 2000-MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) with the Assam government signing a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the Corporation on Friday. The project work is set to start after this rainy season.

While Principal Secretary Niraj Verma signed the MoA on behalf of Assam, CMD Balraj Joshi it on behalf of the power corporation. The MoA wa signed in Guwahati in the presence of NHPC’s Director (technical) Janardan Choudhary, State government’s Secretary (power) Syeda Hasina Murshid Rahman, NHDC MD AK Mishra, SLHP executive director Arvind Bhat and other senior officials of the State government and the NHPC.

The SLHP, located along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, is the largest hydro project of the country currently under construction with an installed capacity of 2000 MW and annual generation of 7421.59 MU.

Part of the cascade development conceived by the Brahmaputra Board, the SLHP is supposed to afford relief from floods by moderating the flood in Subansiri river.

The construction works of the Subansiri Hydroelectric Project have been stopped since 2011 due to agitation by some pressure groups. After a number of committees appraised the project and suggested remedial measures, the technical apprehensions stand assuaged and legal hurdles cleared.
