Suicides among Assam Police Personnel; Panel formed to analyze the disturbing rising trend

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The recent spate in suicides among Assam Police personnel has assumed a “disturbing trend”, and the State government has constituted a four-member committee headed by Additional Director General of Police, Dipak Kumar “to evaluate the reasons” and find out “the remedial measures”. The panel will submit its report within 10 days.

The committee will study the trend and the reasons of the suicides committed by police personnel during the last five years. The other two prime issues to be investigated by the panel are to find out flaws in the existing counselling mechanism, and also in the medical treatment and expenditures of the personnel.

The committee’s recommendations will focus on the system and the process that needs to be improved so that the dangerous trend of rising suicides among the Police personnel can be arrested.

The committee has been formed after police personnel committed suicide in the CM’s official residence at Kharghuli here on February 16.

The committee members are Additional Inspectors General Gaurav Upadhyay and Nanda Singh as well as Medical & Health Officer of 10th AP Battalion Dr. Dipjyoti Sharma.

Meanwhile, a retired IGP of Assam Police, told The Sentinel, “There can be four reasons behind such diabolic attempts. These are related to health issues, family disputes, financial woes, and work stress. These issues need to be deeply probed into.”

He added: “Many police personnel often feel helplessness, say when he/she does not get casual leaves when required urgently or when his senior misbehaves with the concerned personnel.”
