Sweety murder case: Prime accused arrested

GUWAHATI, August 28: The Crime Branch of the City Police today arrested Niel Nibaran Lahkar, the prime accused in the model Sweety Baruah murder case, from Hajo. He confessed before the police of committing the crime.

Sweety, the model of the NRC advertisement fame, was found dead at her apartment in the Bora Service area in the city on Wednesday morning. Sweety, a mother of an eight-year-old boy, was reportedly strangulated, the police said.

While Sweety’s son and husband – Dhrubajyoti Saikia – stays in Golaghat, she used to stay at the city apartment with her sisters.

Sources said she had come in touch with a man from Hajo about six months back. The man – identified as Neil Nibaran Lahkar – was often seen with Sweety.

Sweety’s sister, who pointed the accusing finger to Neil, said, “He was after my sister. He was a psychopath. He had proposed my sister, but my sister had rejected it. Neil used to sometimes cut his wrist…bang his head against the wall.”
