Tapan, Shankar to don saffron

By Our Staff Reporter
Guwahati, Sept 23: Former All Assam Students Union president Shankar Prasad Rai and general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi are set to join the BJP on September 28, in a development that might deepen the turmoil in the party arising out of the induction of new members ahead the 2016 assembly elections. Tapan Gogoi is a ticket aspirant from Sori legislative assembly constituency, while Rai is seeking a ticket from Bongaigaon in the upcoming assembly elections. However, both the seats already have strong ticket contenders who are old-timers in the party, like Arup Singh Purohit in Sori. Sources said even before the two former AASU leaders join the BJP, rumblings have already begun within the party. Some mondal committees in Bongaigaon have threatened to resign en masse if Rai joins the party.
