Tensions flare up in Merapani

Golaghat, February 21: A large number of people from galand wielding sharp weapons today chopped down trees at Indrapur village of Merapani, sparking tension in the area.

At around 8 am today morning, ga people coming from sixteen villages of Wokha district in galand started clearing the area of trees. They wanted to establish a Christian missiory training center, sources said.

Local villagers gathered at the spot and protested their move, but the encroachers did not pay any heed and carried on with their activities.

Golaghat superintendent of police PP Singh, accompanied by several other senior officials of the district administration and CRPF, rushed to the spot and after a series of discussions, maged to send the miscreants back to galand.

However, when some villagers of Jampang No 2 village of galand started proceeding through Indrapur village, they were blocked midway by the locals who demanded their arrest.

The Golaghat SP had to intervene to bring about an amicable solution and both the parties were called to Merapani police station for negotiations. However, there was no representation from the galand administration at the meeting. The ga miscreants were later escorted to their side of the border.
