Tezpur Central Jail release 7 declared foreigners as per Supreme Court order

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: COVID-19 has compelled the State authorities concerned to free 224 declared foreign nationals from the different detention centres, from April 18-23, 2020; and that too at much reduced sureties. Meanwhile, our Tezpur Correspondent adds that as per an order of the Supreme Court, the Tezpur Central jail released seven declared foreigners on Sunday. They had completed two years in the detention center, informed Mrinmoy Dawka, Superintendent of the Jail.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of India had ordered the release of declared foreign nationals completing three years in detention against surety bond of Rs 1 lakh each. However, the acute rise in COVID-19 positive cases in the country has led the apex Court to issue an order recently for the release of declared foreigners who have completed two years in detention centres. The apex Court has also fixed the surety bond for each such detenue at Rs 5,000 only against Rs 1 lakh earlier.

In sync with the order issued by the Supreme Court, the Gauhati High has also asked the Border Police of the State to release the declared foreigners who have completed two years in detention centres.

After the order from the High Court, as many as 224 declared foreign nationals have been released from April 18-23, 2020. The break-up of the release of such detenues by each of the six detention centres in the State is – 75 from Tezpur, 37 from Jorhat, 11 from Dibrugarh, 22 from Silchar, 28 from Kokrajhar and 51 from the centre at Goalpara.
