BONGAIGAON, May 27: The continuing series of arrests of suspected Jammat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) operatives in Chirang district indicates that the jihadi module in the region has been gathering strength. On Thursday night, Chirang police arrested three jihadi operatives from two different areas in the district — one of them from the Amguri area, while the other two from Dawkagar area under Dhaligaon police station. The trio has been identified as Mohiruddin Sheikh of Amguri and Mofidul Sheikh and Rajab Ali Patowary of Dawkhagar. BTAD IGP LR Bisnoi said, “After the police busted a training camp in Dawkhagar in September 2015, initial probe pointed to the presence of at least 28 jihadi cadres in the area. But with the latest arrests, the total number of arrested jihadi cadres has shot up to 29. Meanwhile, interrogation has revealed that at least four to five others are on the run.”

Chirang SP Sankar Brata Rai Medhi said that the arrested three jihadists were wanted by police for a long time but they somehow maged to evade arrest till last night.

Medhi said that they underwent arms training in a jihadi camp. “Among these three, Mohiruddin Sheikh was imparted training at a camp in Amguri while the other two underwent training at a camp in Dawkhagar, which was busted by the police,” he said.
