Transport official held on bribery charges

Guwahati, Dec 7: Anti-corruption sleuths on Monday caught an employee of the Transport commissioner's office red-handed while taking bribe for issuing a certificate.

Senior assistant Debeswar Talukdar was trapped by the anti-corruption personnel after he demanded Rs 38,000 for issuing an 'assurance certificate' - which is required to procure a road permit - from a person whose identity was not disclosed. The normal fee for the certificate is Rs 800. Talukdar was today caught while taking Rs 8,000 as the first installment of the bribe.

The anti-corruption sleuths found Rs 7,09,440 from various files lying on Talukdar's table. His residence was also searched in the evening.
