Tribal Sahitya Sabha in Modi bashing

GUWAHATI, Sept 13: The indigenous tribals of Assam are up in arms against the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for, what they said, the latter’s act of dividing Bangladeshi foreigners based on their faiths.

Talking to newsmen in the city today, the chief convener of the Convening Committee of the Indigenous Tribal Sahitya Sabha, Kamala Kanta Mushahary said: “The indigenous Assamese and the indigenous tribals were fed up with the repeated deception and dictatorship during the long Congress rule in the Assam. The indigenous tribals of Assam did play a crucial role to make the BJP win as many as seven of the 14 seats of MPs in Assam in 2014 Lok Sabha polls. However, after coming to power, the BJP has started to tread a path that has been trodden by the Congress over the years. Now the BJP-led government and the party should get ready to face the consequence of the deception to the indigenous tribals of the State.”

Mushahary said: “In July this year, we met Prime Minister rendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajanth Singh, and submitted memoranda for the solution of various problems which the tribals in Assam have been facing. We also met Union Minister of State (independent charge) for Sports and Youth Welfare Sarbanda Sonowal and submitted a memorandum. Three months have elapsed but they haven’t yet sent any acknowledgment of receiving the memorandum, let alone taking any action to solve the problems.”

On the two notifications issued by the Centre exempting the stay of Bangladeshi and Pakistani foreigners belonging to minorities like Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, Sihks and others, who entered India on or before December 31, 2014 from the rules of the relevant Acts dealing with foreigners, Mushahary said: “We’re set to agitate against the notifications that go against the indigenous Assamese and indigenous tribes of Assam. We’re not going to accept the decision taken by the Centre without taking the indigenous people on Assam into its confidence. Dividing Bangladeshi foreigners on the basis of their faiths is a conspiracy to give Indian citizenship to lakhs of non-Muslim foreigners and allowing them to stay in Assam. Before the last Lok Sabha polls, Modi told during the election campaign that all Bangladeshis would have to leave Assam. However, after coming to power, he has hatched a conspiracy to give Indian citizenship to lakhs of non-Muslim Bangladeshis so as to make the indigenous Assamese and indigenous tribes of the State a minority on their own land. We want the Centre to withdraw the notifications immediately. In order to fight for the interest of the indigenous people of Assam, all the seven BJP MPs of Assam and the seven MPs of other parties should raise their voice against the notifications issued by the Centre.”
