Two New Districts and Sub-Divisions on Tenterhooks

Dispur

The formation of the Cabinet sub-committee to study the necessity of the new districts and sub-divisions as a mere formality is writ large in the episode.

The hopes and aspirations of the people of two newly created districts and 24 sub-divisions are on tenterhooks as the Cabinet sub-committee that was formed to study the necessity of the proposed ‘administrative setups’ has met only a few rounds, let alone submitting its reports. Only one-year-and-four-month time is to go for the term of the present government at Dispur.

Prior to the 2016 Assembly election in the State, the then Congress government created five new districts and many subdivisions in the State. Coming to power after the election, the BJP-led coalition government at Dispur felt that two of the five newly formed districts and 24 subdivisions were not at all necessary. The new government did put on hold its decision on two of the five new districts – South Kamrup and East Kamrup – and 24 subdivisions. The government formed a Cabinet sub-committee to study the necessity of the two new districts and 24 subdivisions. The Cabinet sub-committee, headed by Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as its chairman, has ministers Keshab Mahanta and Rihon Daimary as members.

Even as only one-year-and-four-month time is to go for the tenure of the present government in the State, the Cabinet sub-committee has held only a few rounds of meetings on the fate of the two newly created districts and 24 subdivisions. With the Election Commission of India going to declare the schedule of the Assembly election in the State in the first week of March, 2021, the fate of the two districts and 24 subdivisions continues to hang in balance.
