GUWAHATI, July 26: The All Assam Students’ Union on Thursday condemned the statement made in the Rajya Sabha on July 25 by the Union Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju that Hindu Bangladeshis who came to India till 2014 will not be considered as illegal migrants.

The AASU which led the six-year long anti-foreigners’ movement has termed the statement as part of a dangerous conspiracy to make the indigenous people of the State a minority community in their own land.

A statement issued by AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said that Assam will not accept the burden of a single illegal Bangladeshi who entered the State after March 24, 1971. He said unabated illegal migration from Bangladesh has already posed a serious threat to identity and existence of indigenous people of the State.

“The Centre must respond and respect genuine concern of the people of the State that any more migration from Bangladesh will destroy culture, language and ethnicity of Assamese people,” Nath said.
