Vote or be swamped by Bangladeshis, AASU warns indigenous people

Guwahati, March 31: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Thursday appealed to all indigenous Assamese to vote in the ensuing assembly elections.

Stating that "lakhs of Bangladeshis" will vote again as they have been doing in very election, AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said in the interest of the State, every indigenous Assamese should exercise their franchise in the upcoming assembly elections.

Taking a dig at all political parties, he said instead of implementing the Assam Accord, the Congress has been working "in the interest of illegal migrants."

The AIUDF, he said, was born to protect and shelter Bangladeshi migrants.

"The AGP and BJP had also been in power. But even their initiatives in addressing the issue was not satisfactory," he said.

"The AASU wanted a change at the Central government in the last Lok Sabha elections and accordingly a new government was installed. But we are yet to see any results from the new government. We are keeping a close watch on the functioning of the Central government," the AASU said, pointing to numerous court verdicts which underlined the threat posed by the influx of migrants from across the intertiol border.

The students' body said it would not budge unless the indigenous Assamese people are ensured constitutiol, social and political safeguards.
