We want a correct NRC, says All Assam Students’ Union (AASU)

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has said that it wants an error-free NRC.

Responding to a letter from State NRC Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma to all deputy commissioners and District Registrar and Citizen Registration (DRCR) regarding inclusion of names of ineligible persons in the final NRC on February 19, 2020, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath said on Friday that the students’ union had been saying from the beginning that the NRC was not error free. He said that while names of ineligible persons were enrolled in the NRC, the names of many indigenous people of the State were missing.

Through his letter Sarma mentioned that it has come to his knowledge that after the publication of the final NRC on August 31, 2019, a few names of ineligible persons, particularly doubtful voters, declared foreigners and persons whose cases are pending in the foreigners’ tribunals are in the final NRC. The letter also said a list of such persons has already been shared by the deputy commissioners.

“As such, you are requested to share the details of such persons who are ineligible for inclusion in the NRC but whose names got included in the NRC in addition to the list shared earlier,” the letter said. The State NRC Coordinator has asked the DCs to treat the matter with utmost importance as the details received from the latter will have to be reported to the Registrar General of India.

Nath said the AASU has already approached the Supreme Court with a plea to suggest measures to rectify the final NRC. “We are hopeful that the SC will give the right direction towards this end. The AASU’s top priority is to ensure publication of a Bangladeshis-free NRC,” he said.
