Who funded BJP’s lavish campaign, asks Gogoi

‘Corporate backing behind saffron party’

Guwahati, May 8: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today pointed a finger of suspicion at the source of BJP’s poll expenses, questioning where the saffron party maged to collect "such huge funds for its lavish campaign".

Commenting that the amount of money involved in BJP’s poll campaign in the just concluded assembly elections in Assam raised strong doubts about its source of funding, Gogoi asserted that the saffron party spent money like water in publicity, chopper driven transportation and the like. "Without strong corporate backing, such a lavish election campaign is unimagible," he alleged.

The Chief Minister also said that never before in the history of Assam did it happen that the Union Fince Minister and the Foreign Affairs Minister visited the State and held meetings with businessmen. The people of Assam are intelligent enough to understand the fallout of such meetings, Gogoi said, adding that the huge amounts spent on election campaign must have stemmed from black money pumped in by sources best known to the BJP.

"Will someone give so much of money without return benefit?," the Chief Minister asked pointedly.

Gogoi said no matter what explations the saffron party trots out, "the top brass of State BJP will never be able to hoodwink the people of Assam about the real issue."
