Woman held in triple murder case

GUWAHATI, July 5: Police today  detained a woman in connection with the June 19 triple murder at Banful gar in Hatigaon area of the city in which businessman Prab Kumar Mahanta allegedly killed his wife and two daughters with a hammer after drugging them with sleeping pills.  The woman has been identified as Jyoti Bordoloi. Police sources said the woman had an illicit affair with  Bhaskar Dutta (28), a close friend of Prab Mahanta’s wife Priyanka Mahanta, who was arrested by police on July 2.

A day after the murder, Mahanta’s vehicle was found on Saraighat bridge with its door open. Police suspect he jumped into the Brahmaputra, but refused to confirm his death as no body was found.

A suicide note, believed to be written by Mahanta, has been found. In it, he claimed to have killed his wife and daughters. He mentioned another businessman, yanjyoti Bhattacharjee, and referred to a monetary transaction between them.
