Youth spirit ’set to soothe’ woes of bloodletting in state?

GUWAHATI, January 6: The 19th tiol Youth Festival 2015 is set to propagate the spirit of tiol integration, commul harmony, brotherhood, courage and adventure among the youth by exhibiting their cultural prowess in a common platform in Assam that is just recovering from a mayhem involving the killing of over 80 people, besides rendering thousands homeless.

The preparations for the Rs 6–crore extravaganza being organized by the Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Welfare and the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, Assam  in Guwahati are almost over.

Talking to newsmen in the city today, Assam Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Ajit Singh and state Commission–Secretary, Sports and Youth Affairs Ajay Towari said that as many as 147 people from Assam would take part in various events in the festival slated from January 8 to 12. As many as 4,500 people would take part in the festival from the 28 states of the country, they said.

On the lodging arrangement of the participants, the minister and the bureaucrat said that they would be given shelter in as many as 19 places, mostly at Sarusajai Stadium. Many of the participants have arrived, and many are to arrive tomorrow.

The opening ceremony, according to the minister and the bureaucrat, to be started from 4 pm at Nehru Stadium on January 8 will be presided over by Union Minister of State (Independent) for Sports and Youth Welfare Sarbanda Sonowal and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will be the chief guest. Union Minister of State for Home Khiren Rijiju will be among the guests of honour. Zubeen Garg will perform in the opening ceremony and give the gathering the diverse cultural flavour of Assam.

On January 9, there will be Northeast Rock Concert from 6 pm, and the special attraction of the event is MamiVerte, Mizoram. While the musical nite from 6 pm on January 10 will have Papon and Band as a special attraction, the Bollywood Nite from 6 pm on January 11 will see Alka Yagnik on the stage.

The closing ceremony on January 12 at Nehru Stadium from 10 am will be attended by Union Home Minister Rajanth Singh as the chief guest in the presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Sonowal will preside over the function where Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Col. (retd) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Assam Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Ajit Singh will be guests of honour.


The cultural venue, according to Singh and Tiwari, is Nehru Satadium. The activities usually held during the festival include both competitive and non–competitive events, martial arts, exhibitions, intellectual discourses, young artists’ camp, semirs and adventure programmes.

All competitive events, according to Singh and Tiwari, will be held at District Library Auditorium, Rabindra Bhawan Auditorium, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha Auditorium of Cotton College, Sudmarshan Hall Auditorium of Cotton College and B Barooah College Auditorium. The sports events will be held in Soram field.
