GUWAHATI: After bearing sweltering heat for more than two weeks, Guwahati on Thursday got a respite following a heavy shower. But the much-desired rain also became a reason for tragedy for city residents with the death of a fourteen-year-old boy.

Bikas Das (14) from the Krishna Nagar area in Japorigog was swept away by the artificial flood that created havoc in the city on Thursday. According to eye-witnesses accounts, the boy was riding a bicycle along the flooded R.G. Barua Road and accidentally fell into a drain surged by rainwater near Sundarpur on Thursday evening. Even though the City Police carried out a search operation along with NDRF and SDRF personnel throughout Thursday night, the body of Bikas was found near Bharalu river on R.G. Barua Road on Friday morning.

Thursday’s incident is another tragic example of how artificial floods in the city have been claiming lives over the years. Despite the loss of human lives Dispur is still seemed to be clueless to do away with the disaster.
