'1.44 lakh illegal migrants detected in Assam, 30,014 deported'

GUWAHATI: The Assam Legislative Assembly was informed on Wednesday that till January 31 this year, a total of 1,44,077 illegal migrants were detected in Assam under provisions of the Assam Accord.

Responding to a query from AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Minister of Implementation of Assam Accord, Atul Bora stated that 30,014 such foreigners were deported to their country of origin during this period. Bora also said that 98.35 per cent of work on fencing of the Assam-Bangladesh has been completed so far. Due to objections from the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), a 4.35-km stretch in the Karimganj district remains to be fenced, he informed.
