
Northeast RLBs get Rs 2,115 crore as grants under 15th FC

GUWAHATI: In accordance with the recommendation of the 15th Finance Commission, the Government of India allocated Rs 2,115 crore for the rural local bodies (RLBs) in the northeastern states, including Assam, for the financial year 2025-26. And Assam has got the highest share of the amount.
According to information from the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, the allocations are Rs 185 crore for Arunachal Pradesh, Rs 1283 crore for Assam, Rs 142 crore for Manipur, Rs 146 for Meghalaya, Rs 74 crore for Mizoram, Rs 99 crore for Nagaland, Rs 33 crore for Sikkim, and Rs 153 crore for Tripura.
The Central Government allocated Rs 48,573 crore for rural local bodies in 28 states in the country for the financial year 2025-26 as recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission, whose term will expire on March 31, 2026. The central government has been allocating such funds since 2020-21.
Assam conducted a panchayat poll recently, and the formation of panchayats has been underway. The newly formed panchayats will spend the grants given under the 15th Finance Commission.
The Fifteenth Finance Commission (XV-FC) provides grants to Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) to strengthen local governance and improve basic services in rural areas. These grants are divided into basic (untied) and tied grants, allowing RLBs to address local needs and specific service delivery requirements like sanitation and drinking water.
