GUWAHATI: The first phase of the Body Mass Index (BMI) testing exercise of Assam Police personnel was announced to be over on Saturday, with the results declared for 70,161 personnel.

Out of the total of 70,161 personnel tested, 1,748, or 2.47%, were found to be obese, with a BMI of more than 30. A BMI reading of less than 30 denotes that the personnel tested are fit, while those with more than 30 BMI need to get their reading below that mark. The 1,748 personnel with a BMI of 30 or higher would now have to undergo thorough testing at government medical colleges. They would also be provided medical and nutritional support and tested again after 3 months.

The DGP of Assam Police, GP Singh, took to X (formerly Twitter) to declare the result by posting, "Reference BMI tests; the first phase of the exercise is over. Total no of BMI tests done for @assampolice personnel: 70161 No of Obese (30+ BMI) Police personnel: 1748 (2.47%). As approved by Hon @CMOfficeAssam these personnel would now be thoroughly tested at government medical colleges for any underlying medical condition, provided medical and nutritional support, and tested again after three months. Hope to see a fitter Assam Police in days and years to come. Grateful to Hon. CM Sir, @himantabiswa Sir and @mygovassam for continued support in our quest to improve fitness of @assampolice."

It is necessary to mention here that the statewide BMI testing of the Assam Police personnel started on August 16 this year. The objective of the test was to determine the fitness of the police force.

The obligatory BMI test was announced on May 16, 2023. The BMI test was conducted to cover personnel of the state police force in 36 locations until August 31.
