2 police stations along Assam-Meghalaya border on the anvil

GUWAHATI: Setting up two police stations along the Assam-Meghalaya border is under active consideration by the Assam Government. The move is a remedial measure to the lax security provided to the fringe dwellers of the state over the years.

According to sources in the Border Protection and Development Department, a proposal for setting up a police station each at Khanduli and Umlapher in the West Karbi Anglong district along the Meghalaya border is under active consideration by the government. If the proposal becomes a reality, the two proposed police stations will boost border vigil, besides playing a role in maintaining peace along that stretch of the Assam-Meghalaya border.

The Assam Government formed a few regional committees headed by a cabinet minister to resolve the border issues with Meghalaya in six spots, including two in the West Karbi Anglong district after the recent Mukroh incident. The two police stations will play a crucial role in maintaining peace at the ground level along the inter-state boundary in the West Karbi Anglong district sector. The Assam Government wants to resolve border issues with all its neighbouring states through negotiations.

Assam shares an 884-90-km boundary with Meghalaya in Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Cachar, West Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Morigaon, Goalpara, South Salmara and Mankachar districts.
