GUWAHATI: It cuts a sorry figure that only 21.4 per cent of higher educational institutes (HEIs) in Assam are NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) accredited. And 102 colleges in the state have never yet gone under NAAC assessment.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma did ask all higher educational institutions in the state to ensure NAAC assessment without fail by 2022. NAAC assessment is a must in getting RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) and UGC (University Grant Commission) funds for infrastructure development. It is not all.

"The colleges without NAAC assessment may even face coercive acts like salary cut and 'de-provincialization," the Chief Minister went on record saying recently.

The state has 1,016 HEIs, including government and private colleges, central universities, state universities, open universities, law universities, private spiritual universities, institutes of national importance etc. Among them, 218 HEIs are NAAC accredited.

The primary objective of NAAC, established in 1994, is assessment and accreditation. NAAC accreditation is for five years, extendible on condition to seven years.
