PALASBARI: Three elephants died after being electrocuted in the Rani forest area near Guwahati today.

According to forest department sources, an adult elephant and two calves were out in search of food. They entered a betel nut plantation and tried to bring down a betel nut tree. The tree got attached to a high-voltage electric line and the elephants were electrocuted. Sources added that after post-mortem of the three elephants is conducted, they will be cremated as per procedure.

On the other hand, Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) sources said that the incident was an accident and not human-induced. “The live electric wire was not lying on the ground. The elephants were trying to uproot a tree which came in contact with the live wire,” they said. The sources further said, “APDCL has taken all precautionary measures in the elephant corridors as suggested by the forest department to avoid electrocution of wild elephants.”
