GUWAHATI: With State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirming the death of another COVID-19 patient in Guwahati, the total corona toll in the State has risen to 12.

In a tweet on Tuesday, the Health Minister said, "I'm sad to inform that 50-year-old Dilip Talukdar of Fatasil Ambari was brought dead to the GMCH on June 22. Subsequently, he was tested positive for COVID-19. With this our death toll goes up to 12."

When contacted by The Sentinel, GMCH Superintendent Dr. Abhijit Sarma said, "On June 22 the police brought dead Dilip Talukdar to the GMCH. We collected the swab from the body and it tested COVID-19 positive. The body had no attendants. The police also found it difficult to locate the whereabouts of his family members. It was on Monday the police traced the family members of Dilip Talukdar at Fatasil Ambari. The body was cremated as per COVID-19 protocol on Monday night."

When asked on the number of COVID-19 patients in the GMCH, Dr. Sarma said, "Till 4 pm on Tuesday we have 260 patients and ten of them are in ICUs (Intensive Care Units). Thirty per cent of the patients show symptoms like fever, coldness and coughing."

Till filing of this report, 41 COVID-19 patients were detected on Tuesday. With this the total number of COVID-19 positive cases in the State has risen to 8,407. Since 5,647 have been discharged after recovery, the number of active cases in the State is 2,745. As many as 314 were discharged on Tuesday alone till filing of this report."

In another tweet, the Health Minister said that so far 4,12,214 samples have been tested by the State Health Department. He said, "Our aggressive and targeted testing is designed to flatten the curve by tracing all those who may be potentially infected. Continuing Herculean efforts, Health department teams reached the testing figure of 4,12,214 today."
